Rum Punch
Rum Punch
Painted in 2007, Rum Punch marks a pivotal return in Hill’s practice. An early work from the period that would come to define his second wave of painting. The composition carries a different register: more immediate, less resolved, with gesture pushing forward ahead of structure. Color moves with urgency, establishing the foundation for what would later become more measured, but never restrained.
Even here, the throughline is unmistakable. The instinct for movement, the refusal of static form, the reliance on gesture as both structure and disruption, these elements remain constant, anchoring the work within Hill’s larger body despite its earlier stage of development.
Presented here as a print, the work is translated to retain the energy and rawness of the original canvas. The exhibition-style format allows the composition to hold its presence, emphasizing both its place of origin and its continuity within the broader arc of Hill’s practice.
